When you have a Master's degree in nanotechnology from NTNU and a PhD from the University of Oslo, a career as a patent advisor may not seem like the obvious choice. For Astri, who joined Håmsø Patent Agency in 2021, it was a coincidence that led her into this specialized industry – a field that has opened doors to an entirely new world of innovation and challenges.

Astri describes her transition into the world of patents as both coincidental and exciting. "I came across an ad looking for an 'outgoing nerd,' and that sounded like me," she explains. Although she didn’t exactly dream of working with patents as a child, she has quickly developed an interest in the field. "I’ve always been fascinated by technology and science, and now I get the opportunity to explore many different areas. It’s incredibly educational to gain insight into problems and solutions I didn’t even know existed, and to dip my toes into new fields of study," says Astri.

Learning and Development at Håmsø

As a patent advisor, Astri has gained experience across several technological fields, with a particular focus on biotechnology, aquaculture, consumer products, and mechanical engineering. She is involved in the entire process, from preparing patent applications to responding to statements from authorities. "I enjoy contributing to the protection of inventions and helping our clients navigate the patent process," she explains.

At Håmsø, Astri has received strong support for her professional development. From day one, she has had a mentor who has provided both academic and practical advice. "The mentorship program has been incredibly helpful, especially in the beginning. I’ve received guidance both on the technical side and on how to organize my work week and manage client relationships, something I hadn’t done much of before," says Astri. As she has become more independent, the mentorship has become less intensive, but she continues to have a close collaboration with her colleagues. "Everyone is helpful, and the work environment is fantastic. There’s always someone who can answer questions or share their experiences."

EQE – A Challenge with Strong Support

Astri has chosen to take the EQE (the European Qualifying Examination), a test that assesses patent advisors' knowledge and suitability to represent applicants before the EPO (European Patent Office). The exam consists of several parts, and Astri has already completed both the pre-exam and paper D. She plans to take the remaining exams, paper A, B, and C, next year.

"It’s been challenging to find time to study, especially with two young children at home," Astri says. She highlights the flexibility at Håmsø as being crucial in the process. "I can study at work, which has been a huge advantage. I also have to give credit to my partner, who gives me time and space to study in the evenings and on weekends."

Håmsø has also been an important professional support in preparing for the exams. "Before the pre-exam, for example, we had a dedicated program where we reviewed the curriculum and study material weekly. Andy did a great job preparing us, and I felt well-prepared on exam day," she says.

Motivation and Career

Astri is motivated by the opportunity to help inventors and companies protect their ideas and technology. "It’s exciting to be part of ensuring that inventions get the protection they need to be commercially exploited," she says. This drive leads her to always do her best for her clients.

As for career development, Astri has no plans to change jobs. "I really enjoy my work. I want to complete the EQE, but I have no intention of leaving Håmsø. I plan to retire here!" she says with a smile.

The work environment at Håmsø is also a big reason why Astri enjoys her job so much. "I’ve always felt welcomed, and my colleagues have been incredibly helpful. Everyone is open to giving advice, and there’s a positive atmosphere in the office. We also have a great lunch program, which makes the workday even more pleasant."

Work-Life Balance and the Future

Although there are busy periods, Astri appreciates the flexibility Håmsø offers. "I haven’t quite found the perfect balance between studying and free time yet, but the flexible hours make it easier to find time for both work, studies, and personal life. Once the EQE is over, it will probably be easier to find that balance."

Astri sees Håmsø as a place where both professional development and personal well-being are possible. "We’re a small company with close collaboration between colleagues, and that gives me the opportunity to grow as a professional in a pleasant environment."

A Steep Learning Curve and the Road Ahead

The first period as a patent advisor was marked by a steep learning curve. Understanding the legal aspects of the patent process and the specific language used in the patent world was challenging, but also rewarding. "There’s been a lot to learn, but now I feel like I’ve got a good grasp of it," says Astri.

With her strong background in technology and science, as well as a passionate commitment to innovation, Astri is a great example of how an unexpected path can lead to a meaningful career.
